SUMMARY:Borderline Project by Shiro MASUYAMA
DESCRIPTION:Shiro Masuyama\, a Japanese artist based in Belfast\, Northern Ireland\, converted the interior of a used caravan into two parts—one half related to Irish culture and the other half to British culture. Many of the items\, symmetrically displayed on their respective sides\, have counterparts in both cultures. \nSince moving to Northern Ireland in 2010\, he has often been unsure about the distinctions between Irish and British culture within the complex society of the region. The project has helped him learn and understand the nuances of culture through discussions with people he has encountered who have physically entered the caravan. He has continued to develop the work by constantly adding objects and correcting/adapting the display. Over time\, the caravan has transformed into a small museum of culture; however\, he has struggled to maintain an equal balance between the Irish and British aspects. \nAs he is Japanese\, he has been able to conduct the project from an outsider’s perspective and to bring a degree of neutrality to his approach—he is not religious\, and he doesn’t have any political leanings. \nHe finds it really meaningful to show the caravan in Liverpool\, which is widely known for having the strongest Irish heritage of any UK city. \nArtist bio : \nShiro MASUYAMA is originally from Japan. His master’s degree in architecture has influenced his art projects\, which primarily take the form of site-specific architectural interventions. Using his architectural background and his Japanese identity\, he makes projects that fundamentally connect people and society— so-called socially engaged art. He believes interaction with people often brings unexpected results. It’s one of the most important processes and components in completing an artwork. \nHe moved to Belfast\, Northern Ireland after completing international residencies at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin\, Ireland (2006)\, and Flax Art Studios in Belfast\, Northern Ireland (2009)\, and has been based there ever since. As an artist from Japan who has made their home in Northern Ireland\, he is in a unique position to question how identity can be influenced by the dominant political forces surrounding us. \nHe has attended numerous exhibitions worldwide\, including ‘BIENALSUR 2021 – The State of Things’\, MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art Rosario\, Argentina (2021); ‘Aichi Triennale 2013 : Awakening’\, Nagoya\, Japan (2013). \nhttps://www.shiromasuyama.net/

SUMMARY:FLIPIM 2025 - Flipping conversations on homes and highstreets
DESCRIPTION:About this event \nOn Friday 26th September\, Make CIC and Future Yard CIC are hosting a day of conversation focused on two vital\, connected topics: housing and high streets. Too often\, the people doing the real work on the ground aren’t included in high-profile events. We’re flipping that script; bringing together doers\, experts\, policymakers\, and community voices to shape the conversation. \nWhy now? Because big questions need broad perspectives: \nHow can we deliver 1.5 million new homes before the end of this Parliament and empower community solutions?\nWhat will it take to reverse high-street decline and future-proof our places amid rapid technological change? \nThis event will be a space to listen\, share\, debate\, and co-create ideas. We’ll gather insights found in presentations\, workshops\, panels\, and discussions from across the day\, into a response that we plan to present to the Labour Party Conference the following week. \nTickets will include refreshments & food. \nPlease note: the Access Bursary ticket requires an application process. If you require financial support to attend please fill out this form – https://forms.gle/ZhQpcdgrcFqataUY9 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n\n\n09:00 – 09:30 \nArrival\, Networking & Coffee \n\n\n\n\n09:30 – 19:00 \nExhibition \n\n\n\n\n09:30 – 10:15 \nWelcome \n\n \nCllr Chantelle Lunt \n\n\n\nKeynote 1: Setting the scene – Understanding the challenge\n\n\n\n\n10:30 – 12:00 \nOpening Panel: The Big Picture (land\, funding\, skills\, environment) \n\n \nDave Lomax of Waugh Thistleton Architects \n\n \nAlison McGovern MP \n\n\nCatherine Holmes – Homes England \n\n\n\nSpeakers: other Speakers TBA\n\n\n\n\n12:00 – 13:00 \nLunch \n\nLunch Provided\n\n\n\n\n13:00 – 14:00 \nPanel Option 1: A nation of housebuilders? \n\n \nDr Kirsty Styles – Journalist \n\n \nMillie Starkey – Magenta Living \n\n \nKaya Herstad-Carney – Community Organiser \n\n\nSimon Humphreys – Starship \n\n\n\n\n\n\n13:00 – 14:00 \nPanel Option 2: A nation of shopkeepers? \n\n\nLiam Kelly – Make CIC \n\n\nRuth Rundle – Wish Upon a Party \n\n\nIon Fletcher – British Property Federation \n\n\nGrace Harrison – Kitty’s Laundrette \n\n\n\n\n\n\n14:00 – 14:15 \nCoffee & Networking \n\n\n\n\n14:15 – 16:00 \nWorkshop Option 1: Housing Revolution \n\n \nMelissa Mean – We Can Make \n\n\n\nAll ideas in\, create themes\, call to actions\, vote\n\n\n\n\n14:15 – 16:00 \nWorkshop Option 2: Highstreet Revival \n\n \nAndy Edwards – Make Space Oxford \n\n\n\nAll ideas in\, create themes\, call to actions\, vote\n\n\n\n\n16:00 – 16:15 \nCoffee & Networking \n\n\n\n\n16:15 – 16:45 \nClosing Conversation: The Commons \n\n \nErika Rushton – Kindred \n\n \nDr Jess Steele OBE \n\n\n\n\n\n\n16:45 – 17:00 \nSummary of the Day \n\nGetting our ideas ready for the Labour Conference\n\n\n\n\n18:00 – 19:00 \nFood & Fun \n\n\n\nCollapse agenda\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGood to know\n\n\n\n\n\nHighlights \n\n\n10 hours\nIn person\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRefund Policy \nRefunds up to 7 days before event\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrequently asked questions\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?\n\n\n\n\nThere is pay for parking in all surrounding areas. SUMMARY:FLIPIM 2026 - THE Grassroots Regeneration Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of ideas\, panels\, and workshops\, and we’ll hear from lesser heard voices alongside those who hold power and influence.\n\n\n\n\nFLIPIM 2026: THE Grassroots Regeneration Conference \nInspiration | Activism | Connection \n24th September 2026 \nIt’s 2026 and FLIPIM is back! \nFor this year’s edition the grassroots are gathering in Birkenhead to flip the conversation on regeneration. \nCommunity-led solutions are appearing in government policy as a way to turn around decades of decline in our neighbourhoods. The challenge now lies in execution; how can we leverage opportunities like Pride in Place to maximise the benefits for the areas where we live\, work and play. \nJoin us for a day of ideas\, panels\, and workshops\, and we’ll hear from lesser heard voices alongside those who hold power and influence\, to ensure the future of our places can be built by everyone. \nMaking “Pride in Place” Real\nWe have a historic opportunity to show what happens when investment is met with community agency. Pride in Place will invest £5 billion over 20 years in 339 places creating the chance to make this happen. \nBirkenhead finds itself a national “trailblazer” for the government’s programme. We know that true “Pride in Place” isn’t just about a new coat of paint; it’s about who owns the assets and who makes the decisions. The data shows that the grassroots approach can be transformative: \n\nCommunity-led businesses and assets currently boast a 94% long-term survival rate\, providing the stability our high streets desperately need.\nResearch confirms that resident-led regeneration doubles local business growth in disadvantaged areas compared to top-down models.\nResearch by Power to Change shows that community owned assets contribute £220 million to the UK economy\, with 56p of every £1 they spend staying in the local economy\n\nLet’s Take Action!\nFLIPIM 26 combines high-level insights with hands-on workshops. Our schedule is designed to move from big-picture thinking to practical next steps. \n\nKeynotes & Panels: We’ll host deep-dive conversations with policymakers\, urbanists\, and community leaders on the regeneration landscape.\nWorkshops to Activism: From Community Right to Buy to Highstreet Rental Auctions\, we’ll host tactical sessions on navigating new and existing policy for taking community control of land and property.\nThe Carousel Problem Solving: We’ll use the collective intelligence of the room to find a way through common hurdles and unique challenges.\nTime With Your Peers: Connect with a national network of people for radical honesty and shared expertise.\n\nJoin Us\nIf you believe that regeneration is most successful when it is built with communities\, FLIPIM is for you. Whether you’re a local resident\, housing activist\, or simply looking for the “how-to” of grassroots power\, we’ll see you in Birkenhead. \nTickets will include refreshments & food.
