SUMMARY:Leah Foulkes Solo Exhibition (Independents Biennial)
DESCRIPTION:Make CIC are proud to announce the first exhibition in our new gallery space at our North Docks Site – Sculptor Leah Foulkes\, in collaboration with the 2025 Independents Biennial. \nThe exhibition will be open Monday – Saturday from 11am – 4pm from Friday the 17th of July – Saturday 9th August 2025. \n  \nArtist Statement \nI have always been fascinated by architecture extending to the appreciation of the derelict\, \ndilapidated and decayed. The contrasting properties of materials found within the urban \nlandscape have informed the development of my current sculptural language. I often use \nmaterials and objects taken directly from the built environment without changing their \nfound characteristics in the construction process. The work I am creating is about the formal \nqualities of materials and how I can disrupt or enhance these qualities. I enjoy testing the \nlimits of materials and exploring the ways to manipulate them into new forms or combine \nthem in unexpected ways. Space\, form and materials are all things I consider when making \nthe pieces\, being informed by the space they will occupy and how the forms created will \nchallenge that space. \n  \nArtist’s Biography \nLeah Foulkes is a recent Fine Art graduate from Wrexham University and is now a studio \nholder at Stwidio Olivet\, where she has spent time producing abstract sculptures inspired by \nurban and industrial areas\, through a process of material exploration. The contrasting \nproperties of materials found within the urban environment have formed the development \nof her current sculptural language. She predominantly works on large scale three- \ndimensional pieces but occasionally dips into painting and drawing too. Growing up in \nEllesmere Port has inspired many of Leah’s use of materials\, in particular industrial materials \nmore commonly used in construction and architecture. Leah enjoys testing the limits of \nmaterials and exploring the ways to manipulate them into new forms or combine them in \nunexpected ways.

Participants will be encouraged to paint scenes or objects from their everyday lives\, helping them connect with creative processes and see beauty in their surroundings. This workshop is designed to make creative practice approachable and accessible to all! \nFree to attend- acrylic paint\, wood\, and all equipment required will be provided. We just ask for you to bring an object or photo of a scene you wish to paint\, and we will guide you through it step by step. \nWider Project Overview: \nAnother Day is a collaborative project between curator Francesca Fryer and artist Aaron Jolley\, exploring how the everyday can be perceived and engaged with through processes of care\, facilitation\, and nostalgia. This project will culminate in an exhibition of paintings\, at Elevator Studios in Liverpool in May 2025. \nAaron’s work is inspired by his observations of the everyday- rooftops\, reflections in windows\, and the quiet intimacy of spaces we inhabit. They resonate with universal experiences\, allowing even those unfamiliar with contemporary art to connect with the work. The exhibition will create an environment where everyone\, regardless of background\, can feel comfortable and engaged\, and demonstrate how creativity can emerge from the mundane\, offering a fresh perspective on art’s role in community life. \nThe exhibition will be complemented by events designed to foster connection\, discussion\, and create a welcoming space for community engagement. The event aims to foster collaboration between Birkenhead’s creative organisations\, encourage engagement with the local arts community\, and bring new energy to the area’s cultural offerings. \nThe event will feature contributions from several key local organisations\, including Hamilton Vault Studios\, Spider Project\, Make It Happen\, the Williamson Art Gallery\, Bloom\, Rathbone Studios\, Future Yard and Landlines Studio with more venues and participants to be announced. Each location will showcase unique exhibitions\, open studios\, and creative experiences\, offering something for everyone — from art enthusiasts to curious newcomers. \nAs the driving force behind this initiative\, Make CIC will host a resident showcase at the Hamilton creative hub\, highlighting the incredible talent nurtured within the space.
