SUMMARY:Leah Foulkes Solo Exhibition (Independents Biennial)
DESCRIPTION:Make CIC are proud to announce the first exhibition in our new gallery space at our North Docks Site – Sculptor Leah Foulkes\, in collaboration with the 2025 Independents Biennial. \nThe exhibition will be open Monday – Saturday from 11am – 4pm from Friday the 17th of July – Saturday 9th August 2025. \n  \nArtist Statement \nI have always been fascinated by architecture extending to the appreciation of the derelict\, \ndilapidated and decayed. The contrasting properties of materials found within the urban \nlandscape have informed the development of my current sculptural language. I often use \nmaterials and objects taken directly from the built environment without changing their \nfound characteristics in the construction process. The work I am creating is about the formal \nqualities of materials and how I can disrupt or enhance these qualities. I enjoy testing the \nlimits of materials and exploring the ways to manipulate them into new forms or combine \nthem in unexpected ways. Space\, form and materials are all things I consider when making \nthe pieces\, being informed by the space they will occupy and how the forms created will \nchallenge that space. \n  \nArtist’s Biography \nLeah Foulkes is a recent Fine Art graduate from Wrexham University and is now a studio \nholder at Stwidio Olivet\, where she has spent time producing abstract sculptures inspired by \nurban and industrial areas\, through a process of material exploration. The contrasting \nproperties of materials found within the urban environment have formed the development \nof her current sculptural language. She predominantly works on large scale three- \ndimensional pieces but occasionally dips into painting and drawing too. Growing up in \nEllesmere Port has inspired many of Leah’s use of materials\, in particular industrial materials \nmore commonly used in construction and architecture. Leah enjoys testing the limits of \nmaterials and exploring the ways to manipulate them into new forms or combine them in \nunexpected ways.

SUMMARY:Borderline Project by Shiro MASUYAMA
DESCRIPTION:Shiro Masuyama\, a Japanese artist based in Belfast\, Northern Ireland\, converted the interior of a used caravan into two parts—one half related to Irish culture and the other half to British culture. Many of the items\, symmetrically displayed on their respective sides\, have counterparts in both cultures. \nSince moving to Northern Ireland in 2010\, he has often been unsure about the distinctions between Irish and British culture within the complex society of the region. The project has helped him learn and understand the nuances of culture through discussions with people he has encountered who have physically entered the caravan. He has continued to develop the work by constantly adding objects and correcting/adapting the display. Over time\, the caravan has transformed into a small museum of culture; however\, he has struggled to maintain an equal balance between the Irish and British aspects. \nAs he is Japanese\, he has been able to conduct the project from an outsider’s perspective and to bring a degree of neutrality to his approach—he is not religious\, and he doesn’t have any political leanings. \nHe finds it really meaningful to show the caravan in Liverpool\, which is widely known for having the strongest Irish heritage of any UK city. \nArtist bio : \nShiro MASUYAMA is originally from Japan. His master’s degree in architecture has influenced his art projects\, which primarily take the form of site-specific architectural interventions. Using his architectural background and his Japanese identity\, he makes projects that fundamentally connect people and society— so-called socially engaged art. He believes interaction with people often brings unexpected results. It’s one of the most important processes and components in completing an artwork. \nHe moved to Belfast\, Northern Ireland after completing international residencies at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin\, Ireland (2006)\, and Flax Art Studios in Belfast\, Northern Ireland (2009)\, and has been based there ever since. As an artist from Japan who has made their home in Northern Ireland\, he is in a unique position to question how identity can be influenced by the dominant political forces surrounding us. \nHe has attended numerous exhibitions worldwide\, including ‘BIENALSUR 2021 – The State of Things’\, MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art Rosario\, Argentina (2021); ‘Aichi Triennale 2013 : Awakening’\, Nagoya\, Japan (2013). \nhttps://www.shiromasuyama.net/

SUMMARY:Paint a Disco Ball Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Quirky Academy’s hand-painted disco ball workshop! \nAs seen at Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place Festival. \nGet ready to unleash your creativity and groove with us to disco tunes as you design and decorate a 20cm wooden disco ball made and laser cut from reclaimed wood. Guided by our workshop host and facilitator Rachel.Add your own personal flair to make it sparkle and shine with our eco glitter and water based acrylic paints. \nYou’ll leave with a cute\, eco-friendly masterpiece that’s as unique as you are. Let’s paint and shine together! \nComplimentary glass of fizz on arrival\, light snacks and all materials provided. \nDisco clothes welcome! \nPlease arrive 15 minutes before the class begins. \nWorkshop is for adults only. \n  \nWorkshop hosted at: \nMake North Docks \n34 Regent Street \nL3 7BN \nPlease contact quirkydesigncompany@gmail.com for any enquiries \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrequently asked questions\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDo you have a refund policy?\n\n\n\n\nYes\, it is a 7 day policy due to the need to pay practitioners for their work. Giving refunds on last minute cancellations would mean that practitioners would not be paid for the preparation they have put into their classes. \n\n\n\n\n\nDo I need any experience prior to the class?\n\n\n\n\nNo prior experience is required. \n\n\n\n\n\nHow accessible is the venue?\n\n\n\n\nMake North Docks has full access ground floor access. Please notify us of any access requirements. \n\n\n\n\n\nWhat should I wear?\n\n\n\n\nYou can wear whatever you’d like. We provide aprons on the evening and would recommend short sleeves or pushing sleeves up to avoid getting paint on them. \n\n\n\n\n\nHow can I contact the organiser with any questions?\n\n\n\n\nPlease contact via email Quirkydesigncompany@gmail.com or via telephone on 07722796707
