Folken: Let’s talk about…

What’s all this about then?

Folken started in summer 2016, offering a grassroots, street-level view of the some of the subjects that consume us when we talk about the city we live in. We’ve talked about access to money, meanwhile spaces and creative places; writing, starting a magazine and building a football club.
Make Liverpool is the temporary custodian of Folken for this three-part special edition. We’ve chosen three cracking topics to cover in this series, starting with ‘Gender Equity’, moving on to ‘How the arts are funded’ and finishing with ‘Gentrification’. Join us!
The evenings will start with short talks from a panel of speakers before being opened up to a chaired debate involving the audience. Think Question Time, except we’ll all have a drink in our hands and no one is allowed to talk about Brexit!

Gender equity: Wednesday 11th of October TICKETS

Gender equity means “fairness of treatment for women and men, according to their respective needs. This may include equal treatment or treatment that is different but which is considered equivalent in terms of rights, benefits, obligations and opportunities.”From “masculinity’s pitfalls” recently voiced by Robert Webb to the  statement from Liverpool’s Women’s Leadership Group – there is much to talk about.

How the arts are funded: Wednesday 8th of November TICKETS

After the fallout following Wise Children gaining a place in the new ACE portfolio of funded arts organisations, many people highlighted their opinions on how the arts are funded. For some it works, for others it doesn’t. Join us as we discuss how the arts should be funded – if at all! – with an inevitable focus on Liverpool.

Gentrification: Wednesday 29th of November TICKETS

Gentrification is described as “the process of renovating and improving a house or district so that it conforms to middle-class taste.” Closer to home, Liverpool has its own stories, opinions and opportunities that should be talked about. Join us to discuss gentrification in 2017.
