Make Creates Purple Patch at Radio 1’s Big Weekend

At Make, we’re thrilled to announce our latest project: Purple Patch, a vibrant and interactive art installation commissioned by Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Street Scene for Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Sefton Park (May 23rd-25th).

We’ve designed Purple Patch to be more than just a visually striking space. It’s a dedicated area where festival-goers can recharge their devices and take a moment to relax, all while engaging with a crucial message about recycling in our city. The installation’s design takes its cue from Liverpool’s iconic purple bins, creating a familiar yet impactful environment.

Through Purple Patch, we aim to highlight a key statistic: a significant 18.9% of the items currently placed in purple general waste bins could actually be recycled if placed in blue recycling bins. To make this message resonate, there will be an interactive and competitive quiz within the installation, inviting visitors to test their recycling knowledge in a fun and memorable way.

This project is a testament to Make’s commitment to fostering creativity, community collaboration, and sustainable practices. We’ve proudly commissioned a number of our talented resident and local makers to bring Purple Patch to life, and we’re dedicated to utilising resources responsibly. With most of the materials used in the creation of Purple Patch are being recycled or reused.

We’ve also collaborated with local partners to enhance the installation. Liverpool Street Scene has generously provided local housing recycling waste, which our makers have ingeniously incorporated into a thought-provoking “waste wall” feature, and striking signage. Additionally, a local Liverpool tyre company has contributed repurposed tyres for seating, and Roberts Recycling Ltd has supplied essential textiles for the tyres seating. The paint for the project was also supplied from Reciprocity. Even the informative signage within Purple Patch has been created using recyclable materials by members of the Make community.

For Make, Purple Patch represents an exciting opportunity to connect with a large and diverse audience, promoting positive environmental behaviour through creativity and engagement. We encourage all attendees of Radio 1’s Big Weekend to visit Purple Patch – recharge your devices, engage with the  quiz, have a go on the interactive DJ decks and discover how small changes in your waste disposal habits can contribute to a greener future for Liverpool. We’re incredibly proud to be part of this initiative and look forward to welcoming you to Purple Patch!
