New Year, New Skill

Learn a New skill this New Year

What better way to start off your year than by learning a new skill or craft. Most of us set ourselves new year’s resolutions, but how often do we stick to them? It’s a good idea to make our resolutions realistic and achievable.  Learning a new skill is a resolution that you can achieve by taking an initial first step and here’s how Make can help you get there…
Make is a place of skills a plenty, from woodworking, silversmithing, textiles and so much more. And we love to help people pass on their skills to others. With the new year comes a whole new classes programme, we’ve got some oldies but goodies and some brand new workshops just in time for spring.

Woodwork

You might have heard about our wood workshop at Make North Docks. There’s always something interesting being built, fixed and carved. Both our residents and members have access to our workshops. Our woodwork membership works similar to a gym membership, once you’ve had an induction you have access to build, fix and make. So in the new year, why not join us and become a member!
Or if you’d love to hone your woodwork skills but need a bit more guidance, we have a selection of woodwork classes to get booking for January and beyond. From our intro to woodwork classes were you can make your own wine rack or tool box. To our more intensive woodwork, were over the course of two days you can learn the skills and techniques to build your own stool

Sewing

Sewing is a skill that definitely comes in handy to all of us and can also help you be more sustainable and eco minded! Wouldn’t it be good if you could just mend your favourite top instead of buying a new one? Or repurpose a dress with a beautiful material into something new?  At Make we have the perfect beginners sewing courses to get you started. With the help of Sew Anita, you can learn the tricks and talents to make your own ‘little black dress’ in a five week course, or if you’re not the dress type we have a shorts or pants course too! You’ll come away with your own perfectly tailored piece and the skills to keep on sewing afterwards.

Macrame

Always wanted to try your hand at macrame? Well now you can!
Macrame is a big trend right now and we can see why. A macrame design is the perfect way to add finishing touches to your home furnishings all whilst being sustainable and eco-friendly. With Tassel and Twine you can spend the day learning how to make your own stunning wall hanging in our beginners class or get even more technical in our intermediate class.

Weaving

Staying with the textiles theme, a great new skill to learn is weaving, not to mention it’s incredibly therapeutic. Spend a relaxing Saturday with Kirsty from The Liverpool Weaving Company learning how to thread and set up your own frame loom, using different patterns to weave your own piece of cloth which could make a lovely wall hanging or home furnishing.

Bees

Did you know that an estimated one third of the food we consume each day relies mostly on bees? And did you know we have our very own bees at Make Hamilton Square?
If you’ve ever wanted to know more about bees or the process in how they’re kept, you can spend the day with our Beekeeper John learning basic bee facts, how to make your garden bee friendly, and all about how the hives work. You’ll be able to get suited and booted and get up close and personal with bees learning how to extract honey. You’ll get the opportunity to learn how to make your own bee hotel AND eco-friendly wax wraps for your food with wax straight from the hive. What better way to start your spring off!
