Artist Spotlight: Reimagining Heritage with Emily Edwards

We recently sat down with one of our Make Huyton Village residents, Emily, to discuss her creative process and her involvement in the This Place, This Stage residency. As we gear up for our upcoming showcase, we wanted to give you a deeper look into the artists who make our community so vibrant.

Emily Edwards’ work bridges the gap between the past and the present, using archives to tell stories that resonate with the here and now. From archival research to mixed-media installations, her practice offers a unique lens on the history of our local area.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m Emily and I’m a mixed media artist based in Liverpool. I’m a recent graduate of MA Fine Art at LJMU and currently one of the artists in residency for This Place, This Stage at Make.

How would you describe your creative practice?

My practice is painting and installation based and I work with expanded painting to explore themes of local heritage, identity, and place. I often draw upon archival material and personal research, using painting as a way to reimagine histories and connect them to contemporary experiences.

What are the main inspirations behind your work?

Community and lived experience are some of my key inspirations. My work is research and process led, where I go back to the core of drawing which develops into painting in a loose way. I take forward elements of form and colour from my paintings and interpret them into mixed media collage and installations.

What have you been exploring in the archives for this showcase?

I’m currently looking at archives to look into local histories to build a cohesive body of research in progress focusing on the Mayfair cinema. By drawing directly onto photographs, I combine layers of past and present with documentation and imagination. It reflects an ongoing research process into local heritage, memory, and working class cultural histories, forming part of a wider body of work in development.

Join Us at the Showcase

We are incredibly excited to host Emily and our other talented residents at the Make Huyton Village Showcase. This is a fantastic opportunity to see these research-led pieces in person and celebrate the creative energy of the This Place, This Stage program.
