Could you be the chairperson for Make CIC’s next chapter?

Our mission is simple: we help people turn their passions into prosperity.

We have built a vibrant ecosystem where creativity thrives, skills are shared, and local economies are strengthened. From providing affordable workspace, to working on large scale public projects, we create opportunities for people to join in and prosper. Over fourteen years Make CIC has adapted and evolved, struggled and thrived. It has always been people in and around the organisation that have supported its growth and navigated challenges. That’s why the role of chair, to support the exec directors and lead the board, will be critical as we seek to continue to create impact in an uncertain and complex world.

Why This Chapter Matters

Make CIC has established itself as a leading arts and community organisation. Many people rely on the services and community we provide. Our achievements over the past few years in particular have been significant, but we have many risks and challenges to navigate to deliver our goals over the next decade.

There are two major areas of focus that a new chair will look to navigate when they join that are additional to keeping the organisation performing well and delivering its objectives.

1. Evolving our governance

To unlock opportunities and work hand-in-hand with our community of interest, we are undergoing an evolution of how we are governed. We are exploring the possible transition from a community interest company into a more co-operative model, with the potential to seek exempt charity status. This follows work undertaken by the board to assess what form the organisation will need, to achieve its goals, over the next decade.

2. Guiding Major Development

Following the purchase and refurbishment of Make Hamilton in Birkenhead, Make’s board is now focused on the long term arrangements for Make North Docks in Liverpool and Make Huyton in Knowsley. Huyton Village is undergoing significant town centre regeneration, and with our partners in the Council we will look to maximise momentum there and create a permanent home for the arts in Huyton Village. In addition, the North Docks of Liverpool are shapely in focus. The Mayoral Development Corporation creates a significant opportunity for Make North Docks to play a major role in one of the country’s largest regeneration schemes. Our North Docks hub is home to Make’s commissioned work, where we produce large scale public work with our community. This plays a major part in the reputation of Liverpool as a city of culture and events and creates an opportunity to develop something nationally significant for Liverpool.

Who We Are Looking For

We need a leader who is passionate about organisations that make a difference. Someone who understands the arts and culture are the golden thread of regeneration, although you do not need to be from those sectors. Make’s chair needs to manage the complexity of an entrepreneurial organisation that has impact far beyond its size, but understands its limited resources and scale.

The chair must be passionate, involved, and able to represent the organisation. They must bring non-executive leadership to the board that helps support the executive directors.

  • Strategic Vision: The ability to see the big picture and steer the board through complex topics.
  • Collaborative Spirit: A commitment to co-operative values and empowering a diverse, passionate board of non-executive and executive directors.
  • Governance Knowledge: A solid understanding of good and appropriate governance arrangements.
  • A Champion for Our Mission: Someone who genuinely believes in the power of giving people the space, tools, and support to build their own prosperous futures.
  • The time: to be involved and supportive in a hands-on way.
