This beginners course will take you step by step through the basics of sewing. You will be taught over 3 workshops (Thurs evenings).
About this event
Would you like to learn a new skill for the new year? Dream of being able to make your own clothes? Or do you have an old sewing machine lying around that you want to use?
Make your own Kimono Style Robe
This is an introduction to sewing course which takes place over three weeks (on Thursday evenings).
Small class size (3 people) to make sure everyone gets plenty of support.
You can bring your own machine or use one of ours.
Take the free pattern home after the course.
Skills you will gain:
– Fabric knowledge
– Sewing machine operation and threading
– Cutting fabric from a pattern
– Overlocker operation
– Making French seams
– Making roulard loops and tie belt
– Facing and interfacing
– Marking out even hems
– Make and sew even patch pockets
In week 1 you will be given a pattern to start cutting out your kimono using either your own material or fabric provided by the tutor. If bringing your own you will need 2.5 meters of woven cotton or linen fabric that is 140cm wide.
You will make copy of your pattern that you can keep.
The tutor, Anita will help you to set up your machine showing you all the parts of the sewing machine and giving a full explanation of how to thread it and load the bobbin.
You will learn about stitch length/width, thread tension and look at any issues you have with your machine (if you have brought your own). If Anita can’t fix it , she will point you in the direction of someone who can. You will receive continued support in threading and troubleshooting your machine throughout the course as it can be difficult at first.
You will practice stitches on the machine and learn how to reverse stitch and turn corners. You will try out stitching of different lengths and the zig zag stitches.
Next, with ample support and supervision, you will start pinning and sewing your kimono pieces together.
You will be given instruction on how to use the overlocker and be given the opportunity to practice before using it to give your seams a professional neat finish.
Over the following 2 weeks you will sew your kimono up to the finished garment which will give you plenty of practice in using your sewing machine and gaining confidence.
The class is small with a maximum of 3 people so you will receive lots of help.
And last but not least – you will try on your gorgeous new Kimono Robe and give yourself a massive pat on the back!!!

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?
Feel free to get in touch with the Make CIC office at 0151 601 8665 or email email@example.com
Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
If you find that you cannot attend then you are welcome to pass your place on to a friend who may find it useful. Please let the organiser know if you need to do this.
Alternatively tickets can be transferred to a future event up to 7 days before the event.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, a register will be taken at the workshop, it isn’t necessary to print your ticket.
What is the refund/cancellation policy?
Refunds will be offered in the event of the class being cancelled – in this instance we will give as much notice as possible, usually at least 5 days, and offer alternative dates if appropriate.
This class does have a minimum requirement of ticket sales to proceed, so there is a possibility of it being cancelled, but we will contact you five days before if this is the case.
If for any reason you find you are unable to attend then please get in touch and a refund can be offered up to 7 days before the workshop.
This is because we pay our practitioners fair wages for their work- giving refunds on last minute cancellations would mean that practitioners would not be paid for the preparation they have put into their classes.
*Refunds will be given minus Eventbrite fees, unless Make CIC cancel the class, in which case a full refund will be given*
The name on the registration/ticket doesn’t match the attendee. Is that okay?
Please bring along a print out of your ticket if the registration does not match the attendee, or contact firstname.lastname@example.org to have them change the ticket so it contains your name.
What can I bring into the event?
You don’t need to bring anything but yourself. All materials are provided.
Wear comfortable clothing and feel free to bring along a drink or a snack!
